IBRA Hosts 2024 Holiday Dinner, Showcasing Biomedical Innovation and Global Collaboration

The International Biomedical Research Alliance (IBRA) brought together leaders in science, academia, and industry for its 2024 Holiday Dinner at Queens’ College in Cambridge, UK. The evening was dedicated to celebrating innovation and collaboration in biomedical research. The event highlighted IBRA’s impact over the past year and introduced exciting new initiatives for the future.

Since its inception in 2005, IBRA has been a driving force in advancing biomedical research, supporting nearly 400 Scholars through the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program. With a remarkable 93% graduation rate, Program alumni have collectively published over 5,400 peer-reviewed articles and hold more than 115 commercialized patents. These achievements underscore IBRA’s commitment to empowering the next generation of biomedical leaders.

During the dinner, President Dr. Swafford discussed how IBRA is addressing emerging trends in biomedical science and education. Together with IBRA Vice President Dr. Dworzak, they discussed a response to a growing need for global collaboration and professional connectivity, with the organization set to launch IBRA-N, a selective international professional society. This initiative, debuting in early 2025, will connect mid-to-senior career professionals in life sciences, fostering mentorship, talent matching, and innovative partnerships.

“IBRA-N represents the next evolution of our mission, creating a global network that accelerates breakthroughs and strengthens international cooperation,” said IBRA Director of Engagement and Events Ms. Ambrico.

IBRA’s diverse portfolio of initiatives was also spotlighted at the event. These include grants and scholarships to support research, travel, and housing; annual colloquia and networking events that foster knowledge sharing; and training and development programs in partnership with academia and private organizations. The organization aims to prepare Scholars for both traditional and alternative career pathways.

The evening featured an engaging fireside chat between Dr. Dworzak and Dr. Mellad, both distinguished alumni of the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program. In their conversation, Dr. Mellad shared insights into his career journey, the pivotal decision to transition out of academia, and the inspirations that shaped his early professional path.

The 2024 Holiday Dinner was not only a celebration of IBRA’s achievements but also insight into what they hope to achieve in 2025 and beyond. As the organization expands its reach through IBRA-N and continues its work in critical biomedical fields, it remains steadfast in its mission to catalyze breakthroughs that transform lives.

IBRA Attends SACNAS NDiSTEM Conference

IBRA Attends SACNAS NDiSTEM Conference

The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Diversity in STEM Conference unites a diverse community of scientists, educators, and students from across the USA. This year, the International Biomedical Research Alliance (IBRA), with support from Regeneron, attended the conference, demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the biomedical research field. Held over several days, the conference provided attendees with opportunities for networking, professional development, and knowledge-sharing, all in an environment that celebrates the power of diversity in driving scientific innovation.

IBRA was represented by its Director of Engagement and Events, Alexandra Ambrico, who not only networked with attendees and highlighted IBRA’s mission but also introduced an exciting new initiative, the IBRA Network (IBRA-N). This is a novel professional society and online community that connects emerging and established international biomedical research leaders and organizations to foster collaboration, identify talent and funding, and to promote success. IBRA-N provides a platform for collaboration, mentorship, and resource sharing to leverage existing and developing skills and resources to further our collective goal of empowering the next generation of biomedical leaders.

As IBRA continues to expand its impact, the launch of IBRA-N signals a critical step forward in creating accessible pathways for emerging scientists, ensuring they have the tools to succeed in a competitive and rapidly evolving field. The program’s inclusion at SACNAS gave attendees a first look at the ways IBRA and its partners are working to make research opportunities more inclusive and accessible. Through IBRA-N, trainees from diverse backgrounds will benefit from mentorship, career counseling, and access to specialized research networks.

IBRA’s presence at SACNAS reinforces a shared vision of empowering young scientists to become leaders in biomedical research. Through these efforts, IBRA and Regeneron are dedicated to fostering an inclusive scientific community, one that recognizes and values the unique contributions of all its members.
